Dyslexia Help for UK Driving Tests

We recently had an enquiry about getting extra help with the written theory test for UK car and motorcycle licences.

We have spoken to the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), who conduct all UK tests and determined what help is available and how to access that help.

Firstly, the theory test is presented by and replies entered into a computer. Normally, the questions are shown on the screen, which the applicant must read and then select the correct answer from a list of possible answers. The time allowed for the test is 40 minutes.

There are two types of help:
1. The computer is able to read out the questions in English or Welsh, including the list of answers. The applicant must then select the correct answer on the screen. The audio version of the test is available to anyone, but you must tell the DSA that you require the audio version when you book the test

2. Extra time is available for those with learning difficulties, including Dyslexics. Up to twice the time (that is 80 minutes) can be allowed. To obtain this help, you must tell the DSA that you required the extra time for the test and you MUST send in evidence of your reading difficulty. This can be a letter from your doctor, school, college or indeed a Dyslexia Association. The letter must be verifiable (that is, the signatory may be contacted to confirm that the letter is genuine). Once the DSA are satisfied that you qualify for the extra time, this will be given to you during the theory test.

One point that the DSA made is that you are not allowed to take another person in to the test to read the questions or help. If you require such assistance, the test centre manager will fulfil this role.
